Atheism (Without God in the World)

According to American Atheists

“Atheism is not a disbelief in gods or a denial of gods; it is a lack of belief in gods.”

(I added the underlines for emphasis.)

“Belief” is synonymous with trust. Therefore, when I read this definition of “atheism,” I then read it as follows…

“Atheism is not a distrust (not a not trust) in gods or a denial of gods; it is a lack of trust (a not trust) in gods.”

Do you also see the problem with this statement?

It concludes that the atheist has a lack of belief (a not trust) in gods. Yet, the first part of the statement says that atheism is not a disbelief (not a not trust) in gods. So, if we remove the double negative (not a not) element in the first half, we find that atheists do believe (trust) in gods. In other words, it’s saying that atheists rely on gods, yet they lack a reliance upon gods.

Here’s an even simpler way of looking at it…

Disbelief = a lack of belief

In other words, what the definition is saying is…

“Atheism is not a lack of belief in gods or a denial of gods; it is a lack of belief in gods.”

This demonstrates the chaotic nature of atheism. I say “chaotic” because when God is ignored, there is then no ultimate basis for anything. Nothing makes sense. Objectivity is just pipe dream. Proof is rendered meaningless. Grounding is nonexistent. There is no way to verify assertions. And, not only are assertions not verifiable in their paradigm, but assertions are not even coherent. When such things are in view, we get definitions like the one above.

Paul wrote to the Church in Ephesus about who they were once without. But now, because of Christ, they are no longer (like the atheist)… without; no longer without the Messiah; no longer without hope; no longer without God in the world; no longer lacking peace…

Ephesians 2:12-14a (HCSB)
“At that time you were without the Messiah, excluded from the citizenship of Israel, and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus, you who were far away have been brought near by the blood of the Messiah. For He is our peace…”

May we (Christians) realize what we now have…

Godspeed, to the brethren!
