Charles Darwin postulated his theory of evolution based on assumption. That’s right, assumption. “Assumption” is to solely suppose something to be the case, without proof. It’s synonymous to making claims rooted in blind faith, and it is where Darwin rooted his evolution theory.
Why do I say this?
Check out this revealing quote from him, which demonstrates the grounding or basis of his worldview:
“For myself, I do not believe that there ever has been any revelation. As for a future life, every man must judge for himself between conflicting vague probabilities.” – From: The Life and Letters of Charles Darwin
Do you understand the significance of this statement? He is basically saying that there is no ultimate standard or reference for knowing anything, beyond human reason. Darwin did not believe that there had ever been any revelation, and that we must solely judge for ourselves what is true and what is not true. In other words, Darwin grounded his theory, and anything else that he had ever postulated, upon nothing. He was a relativist.
Let me ask you a question:
How does one know anything?
Have you ever really thought about how you know things? In order for one to know anything, one must know everything, or one must have a revelation from someone who does.
Think about it…
We know A, because of B. We know B, because of C. We know C, because of D, and so on. This is called a correspondence theory of truth. In correspondence theory, the truth or falsity of a statement of fact is determined by its relationship to the part of the world described by the statement. In other words, in order for us to know something, we must have something to reference it by, to see if it’s valid. The thing is though, unless this regress of correspondence ends at some definitive standard or authority, the regress will not end at the letter Z, but it will be endless. It will simply remain as an infinite spiral into the abyss of uncertainty. Without a valid, final referent, nothing could ever be known. And when nothing can ever be known, blind faith or assumption is all one is left with. Such is the grounding upon which Darwin admittedly rested all of his ideas.
It’s amazing how prevalent assumption is, and how easily we (Christians) buy into it. We must be careful, discerning, and wise. I know that I am susceptible because God has granted me repentance (the mournful recognition of my total depravity before a holy God). With such a granting comes the realization that I should not trust my assumptions, because my assumptions are grounded in my reasoning, which are rooted in my depravity, which basically equates to nothing.
In other words, “The Theory of Evolution… Evolved from Nothing”.
