So it is a sin for the person who knows to do what is good and doesn’t do it.

The above verse, in my opinion, is the best way of describing what a sin is. Here, the Greek word for sin is hamartia. It’s an archery term, which originally meant “to miss the mark.” In other words, the term was first used to describe archers whose arrows failed to hit the target. When we sin or “miss the mark,” we then do not do what we know to be the right thing.

So then, what is doing the right thing?

It’s hitting the mark. It’s doing what we know to be right.

Moses and John

Moses had encouraged the children of Israel with this same concept, in order to prepare them for old covenant life in the promised land…

Do what is right and good in the LORD’S sight, so that you may prosper and so that you may enter and possess the good land the LORD your God swore to give your fathers, by driving out all your enemies before you, as the LORD has said.

John also offered the same sentiment, to remind those who are of the new covenant life that doing what is right demonstrates who they have been born of…

If you know that He is righteous, you know this as well: Everyone who does what is right has been born of Him.
