Inheritance

Something deeply profound struck me as I drove home from work:

Inheritance is based on a relationship you did not choose.

Think about that in light of these scripture verses:

John 15:16
“You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in My name, He may give it to you.”

Romans 8:15
“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!””

Galatians 4:6-7
“And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.”

Ephesians 1:11
“In Him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will”

We (Christians) are exactly like a child, chosen by a stranger from an orphanage for adoption, who are then appointed as an heir to that stranger, by that stranger, to inherit that stranger’s possessions, because that stranger has made us their child. And that stranger… is God.

Just ponder on that for a moment.

We did NOTHING, to be adopted. We did NOTHING to become an heir. We did NOTHING to suddenly have an inheritance. And what is that inheritance?

God, Himself!

Here’s my point:

Revelation 1:5b-6
“To Him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.”

If we are now not only the adopted of God, but also priests, check out what the Old Testament priests, the Levites (who type and shadow the priest’s of Revelation), inherited:

Ezekiel 44:28
“This shall be their inheritance: I am their inheritance: and you shall give them no possession in Israel; I am their possession.”

Brethren, we have been chosen from the orphanage of fatherlessness, chosen by God, adopted by the Father, paid for by the work of His Son, Jesus Christ, on the cross 2,000 years ago in Palestine, indwelled by His Spirit, heirs of Him, where we inherit God Himself!

Celebrate your Father this Father’s Day, and everyday…

Psalms 16
“Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.”
As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,
in whom is all my delight.
The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply;
their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
or take their names on my lips.
The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
you hold my lot.
The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.
I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
in the night also my heart instructs me.
I have set the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;
my flesh also dwells secure.
For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
or let your holy one see corruption.
You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

Godspeed, to the brethren!
