In the beginning…
Genesis 1:1 (ESV)
“…God created the heavens and the earth.”
In the end, the apostle John tells us what he sees in a vision…
Revelation 21:1-2 (ESV)
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.”
We are still in the middle of these two things. We are still between creation and restoration. We are still in the midst of a work in progress. It’s why we should…
1 John 3:13
…not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you.
For now, our job is to cling to Christ and to what He has said… Why?
Because…
Mark 13:31 (ESV)
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”
Wake Yourself
His words will come to pass. You can bet on it. Therefore, we must always be in His Word and never be found nodding off…
Mark 13:32-37 (ESV)
“But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning— lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.”
Here is the prophet Isaiah quoting God and then encouraging Jerusalem to wake themselves. May it encourage us to learn from their mistake, because we are that New Jerusalem…
Isaiah 51:12-17a (ESV)
“I, I am he who comforts you;
who are you that you are afraid of man who dies,
of the son of man who is made like grass,
and have forgotten the LORD, your Maker,
who stretched out the heavens
and laid the foundations of the earth,
and you fear continually all the day
because of the wrath of the oppressor,
when he sets himself to destroy?
And where is the wrath of the oppressor?
He who is bowed down shall speedily be released;
he shall not die and go down to the pit,
neither shall his bread be lacking.
I am the LORD your God,
who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—
the LORD of hosts is his name.
And I have put my words in your mouth
and covered you in the shadow of my hand,
establishing the heavens
and laying the foundations of the earth,
and saying to Zion, ‘You are my people.’”
Wake yourself, wake yourself,
stand up, O Jerusalem…
Godspeed, to the brethren!
