The “NAS Baby”… And the Gospel

According to marchofdimes.org:

“Neonatal abstinence syndrome (also called NAS) is a group of conditions a newborn can have if he’s exposed to addictive street or prescription drugs in the womb before birth. A baby can get addicted to these drugs and then go through drug withdrawal after birth.”

A “NAS Baby” is a baby who was born as a drug addict. Whatever measure of fairness one would like to judge such a sad fate, it really doesn’t matter. Such a baby must be treated as a drug addict after they are born, or else they will die in their condition. There’s no way around it.

No, they did not choose to be a drug addict, and yes, their condition is a product of their mother’s bad choices; but at the end of the day, like it or not, their fate is death.

Unless of course… there are doctors who choose to treat and heal them, but without the NAS Baby even being able to request such help.

Sound familiar?

Romans 5:12
“…sin came into the world through one man…”

(Just as drug addiction for the NAS Baby came through the mother, we are all sinners because our sin came through Adam.)

Psalms 51:5
“Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
and in sin did my mother conceive me.”

(Just as the NAS Baby is born a drug addict, we are all born as sinners.)

1 Corinthians 15:22
“For in Adam all die…”

(Just as the NAS Baby’s condition will lead to death, our condition will also lead to death.)

John 15:16
“You did not choose Me, but I chose you…”

(Just as someone else must choose to treat the NAS Baby, Someone else must choose to treat us.)

John 8:24
“I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am He you will die in your sins.”

(Just as unless the NAS Baby receives the proper treatment they will die, we must also receive the proper treatment… or we will die.)

Like it or not, we are all born in sin:

Romans 3:23
“…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”

Unless we recognize our condition and plead with God to forgive us our sins (repent), and cling to Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, trusting in Him, we will die in our sins…

John 8:24
“I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am He you will die in your sins.”

Godspeed, to the brethren!
