“Political ideology is really an outgrowth of our religious beliefs. You can’t separate what a person believes from how a person will govern.” – Voddie Baucham
That is part of Voddie Baucham’s response after being asked why Sarah Palin’s faith matters, during an interview on CNN, back when Sarah Palin was named as the candidate for Vice President in 2008. His response is important because it gets to the heart of what to consider when we (Christians) enter the voting booth. Regardless of what a candidate claims to be about or what platform they promote, at the end of the day, it is how they live their life and what their mind-set is which will determine, as Voddie says, “how a person will govern.” Plus, to ever expect an unregenerate candidate to govern according to Christian ethic would be a mistake.
Why do I say this?
Because, such a person (regardless of how hard they try), is not even able to do anything which is pleasing to God.
Look at what Paul wrote to the Romans…
Romans 8:5-8 (HCSB)
“For those who live according to the flesh think about the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, about the things of the Spirit. For the mind-set of the flesh is death, but the mind-set of the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind-set of the flesh is hostile to God because it does not submit itself to God’s law, for it is unable to do so. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.”
Speaking for myself, if I vote for one who lives according to the flesh and who also has a mind-set according to the flesh, then I can’t complain when I get a leader who governs according to the flesh, who is devoid of the ability to please God in any way.
I hope this helps…
Godspeed, to the brethren!
